Shortly after our son was born, my husband wanted to get a "baby cam." He hooked it up near his crib and we were able to monitor him from our television in our bedroom. Our son was only in the next room, but we still wanted to be sure. It was nice having a cam on his when we could not see him from our room.
Nowadays, it would be nice to have a webcam to use to keep in touch with our family. We can have face to face chats if we wanted to. Do you have family far from you? Do you use a webcam?
Co-founders Greg Duffy and Aamir Virani initially developed Dropcam thanks to a neighborhood menace. Greg's father desperately wanted to figure out which of the local dogs was "fertilizing" his yard. He began hooking up IP cameras, but couldn't get the system to work just right. He also found that storing video on his hard drive was not an easy, scalable or secure solution.
